Consulting Services for Integrated Tourism Development, Infrastructure and Livelihood Improvement in Unguja, Zanzibar (Chwaka, Makunduchi and Nungwi villages)
This project supports an Integrated Program for Local Area Development (IPLAD) approach to tourism development, which merges (i) spatial planning, urban design, physical infrastructure and facilities, (ii) livelihood support, (iii) tourism product development and promotion, and (iv) capacity building and partnerships. The proposed activities aim to improve the overall quality of life in three tourism gateway villages with a specific focus on infrastructure, heritage revitalization and livelihoods while retaining, reflecting, and enhancing each village’s unique character.
Specific objectives:
- Using participatory methods, develop Integrated Tourism Development Plans for each village that provide a framework for physical investments, livelihood support, tourism product development and capacity building;
- Prioritize physical investments, create spatial plans, detailed engineering and architectural designs, environmental and social safeguards due diligence, prepare bidding documents, and supervise construction for small infrastructure investments;
- Design and implement a Tourism Development Support Program, including a livelihood support program to build local supply chains, develop and deliver skills training and entrepreneurship development activities;
- Provide capacity building support to develop destination partnerships and adopting sustainable tourism standards and practices;
- Provide technical assistance for tourism product development, including branding, management models and training for new tourist attractions and assets, and sustainable waste management.
